Fall Color Fanatics – Don’t Miss This Line-Up of Daytrips!

| September 12, 2023

There is something special about each of the four distinct seasons in Minnesota, but the fall holds a special place in many of our hearts. If you’re lucky enough to live in the Twin Cities, or are visiting this fall, take a day to get out and enjoy the natural beauty of the surrounding areas:

Late September – Early October

St. Croix River Valley

The St. Croix River Valley, located just east of Minneapolis, is a picturesque destination for witnessing the early hues of fall. The valley’s rolling hills are adorned with a vibrant tapestry of red, orange, and gold leaves. Enjoy a delightful lunch at Domacin Restaurant & Winebar in downtown Stillwater, offering a menu filled with locally inspired dishes. While here, don’t miss out on the Stillwater Lift Bridge and the charming antique shops.

Landscape Arboretum

The Minnesota Landscape Arboretum is a stunning place to experience autumn’s beauty. Its diverse collection of trees and plants creates a kaleidoscope of colors. Explore the arboretum’s themed gardens and hiking trails for a deeper connection with nature. Afterward, stop at Bonsai Korean Cuisine for dinner in Chanhassen on your way home.

Caponi Art Park

Nestled in Eagan, Caponi Art Park is a hidden gem for fall foliage enthusiasts. The park’s wooded trails are a serene setting for fall walks. For lunch, snap up a table at the brand new Luna & the Bear restaurant that has been very popular and opens at 11am.

Fort Snelling

Fort Snelling’s historic grounds are not only rich in history but also in fall colors. Explore the fort’s grounds and then enjoy a meal at “Sea Salt Eatery,” known for its fresh seafood and scenic Minnehaha Falls views. Sea Salt has some amazing food options and is set right in the park – but check that they are still open for the season, as they usually close up for the winter around the third week in October.

Taylors Falls

Taylors Falls, situated on the banks of the St. Croix River, offers breathtaking views of the river surrounded by cliffs covered in vivid fall foliage. “The Drive-In Restaurant” serves classic American fare and has a nostalgic charm for lunch, or Tangled Up in Blue offers wonderful fine-dining options for dinner.

Golden colors surround the enchanting Minnehaha Falls in Minneapolis.
Mid-October to Late October

Red Wing

Red Wing is a postcard-perfect town on the Mississippi River. The bluffs surrounding the town burst into brilliant shades of red and gold during mid to late October. “The Staghead” is a popular choice for lunch Tuesdays through Saturdays, offering a diverse menu of American cuisine. Don’t forget to visit the Red Wing Shoe Store & Museum and the famous Red Wing Pottery while you’re here.

Winona

Winona’s picturesque setting along the Mississippi River and its rolling hills make it an excellent fall destination. Try “The Boat House” for a waterside dining experience with typical American fare, or opt for a hidden gem and stop in at Ocean Sushi (which has more than Sushi on the menu if that’s just not your cup of tea). Explore Garvin Heights Overlook for panoramic views of the fall colors.

Lanesboro

Lanesboro, often called the “Bed and Breakfast Capital of Minnesota,” offers charming streets lined with colorful trees. Arrive early and catch breakfast at the Lanesboro Pastry Shoppe to go with the beautiful morning light along the Root River State Trail for a unique perspective on the autumn foliage.

New Ulm

New Ulm’s German heritage and scenic landscapes come alive in the fall. Stop in at Lola for an unassuming but tasty lunch. Explore Flandrau State Park or the Hermann Heights Monument for great fall views.

Apple Blossom Scenic Drive

The Apple Blossom Scenic Drive near La Crescent is a must-visit during late October. While there are no restaurants directly on the route, you can enjoy a picnic at Great River Bluffs State Park. The drive offers breathtaking vistas of the Mississippi River Valley adorned in warm fall colors.

These day-trip destinations near Minneapolis and throughout Minnesota promise a magical autumn experience. With stunning fall foliage, delicious dining options, and additional attractions to explore, you’ll create lasting memories while reveling in the beauty of the season.
